Mission Description | The stories have everyone scared. Two shinobi who roam the streets, who look and act like everyone else, have gone rogue and become serial killers. They seem to be killing other C Rank shinobi and the common assumption seems to be that they are out for revenge, that the targets are specific. Nobody knows who is next, but the past two victims were genin, found stabbed with needles. Traces of mice seem to be in each murder scene, despite the well kept apartments of the genin, and are likely related to the summoning skills of one of the shinobi. Paralytic poison is found, small bite or claw marks are found, but the cause of death seems to be a simple brutal stab wound through the chest. The mission is to find the group of killers and stop them. Apprehension through arrest is preferred, but killing them if necessary is allowed. The mission is failed if more victims are killed before you can catch them.
Mission NPCs |  2 C Rank shinobi (one who specializes in medical, one who specializes in summoning) and 1 D Rank accomplice shinobi

Rei whistled softly to himself a tune that he had made recently. It was a slow paced tune that he had practiced a bit with Jin and their little band. Their band was small, just the two of them and playing at an old coffee shop that was slowly starting to pick up in popularity. Whether it was from Jin and Rei's band, or the quality of coffee- he wasn't sure, but then again he didn't care too much if people liked his music or not. "I guess this should be the place." he told himself, stopping at the entrance to the park in the village and sat down on the nearest bench. He hadn't had his coffee yet today and he hadn't slept since last night either. He and Jin had spent the whole night practicing their music and performing a small concert at the coffee shop near the slums. Sometimes he wondered if other shinobi knew of his hobby. So far, no one had said anything at least. Though occasionally some fangirls would recognize him and ask for his autograph. He wasn't famous, no... he was new to this whole gig. He and Jin had started the band out of curiosity and just enjoyed making music together. It was that or killing people for whatever justified reason they could find.

That was the difference between Rei and the two murderous shinobi in the mission that he was assigned to. Apparently these two had no reason to kill and they only targeted weak ninjas. Pathetic. he thought to himself, disappointing that two murderers with a very similar style to Rei and Jin, were so hung up on killing only people that they felt safe about killing. Personally, Rei's kills held principle behind them. Plus he loved a good challenge. The idea of limiting his killing to people he knew couldn't fight back, just bored him. "Soon, the predators will become the prey..." he would say out loud, believing no one was around him. He laughed to himself. One of the two murderous shinobi used a summoning contract of mice. As Rei himself was the summoner of serpents, it was only fitting that he was the one placed on this mission to hunt them down. Capture them alive? No. He was going to bite them to death. All he had to do now was wait for his partner, Taka to arrive so they could go into the park and investigate. While he waited, he watched everyone coming and going with his eyes, noting the color of their souls. Half a shinobi's work was gathering intelligence.

Takara Mizutani came dressed for the occasion, striding up to Rei from behind where he sat on the bench. Oh she knew he hated people sneaking up on him, or at least by the way he always sat facing the higher concentration of people, it had seemed that way. She wore head to toe long tight grey pants and a matching sweater. She had her wrists both still adorned with navy fingerless gloves, and over her top was a long dark blue tunic that draped over her gliding form and hung by her thighs. A belt around her waist held a small pack for her basic supplies, a holster around her right thigh held her extra kunai. Taka knew this mission was a big deal. Not just because it was a mission, but because it was another mission with Rei, their third one. She had a wobbly nindo but more than that she had a determined goal to reach with Rei. She was going to find a way to earn his trust. Trust was strength, trust was power.

She crept up behind him slow and silent, masking her sounds by stepping to the rhythm of the people around them. She noted also she was downwind of him, a few whisps of his green silky hair tantalizing and flowing behind him and the bench. She was tempted to use body flicker, but chose not to. Taka simply stood behind him and tapped the bench with her right hand, just to the right of his own right shoulder. "Hey partner!~" She greeted in a cheery tone, hoping she had spooked him just a little bit. Friends pulled pranks but she wanted to start off a little more basic. Even the lowest of low level pranks might send the paranoid Rei into a murderous frenzy. "It seems that you were my prey all along~" The green haired female chuckled and added, had she been given the chance to, "Sounds like we are after a duo today and don't worry, I've got your back." It was unintended, but the back comment was a kind of funny little joke and so she grinned like an idiot. Being a shinobi didn't have to mean having no sense of humor.

Taka had arrived, he noted. Not having visibly seen her directly, he had glanced her from his peripheral vision. Had he not been purposefully watching the people coming and going, she would have most assuredly caught him off guard. She was being unusually brave, to prod at him playfully- he couldn't help but want to respond to her playing in a like-minded manner. As she approached from behind, he quickly performed some sneaky handseals in his lap. He remained casual but alert, as he continued to watch the people around him to not give away his ruse. Then as she tapped him, it happened. She tapped his shoulder, calling out to him in her friendly way and then teased him, pretending that he was her prey. After her last comment however, the form that would be Rei, poofed and was replaced by a log now sitting upright in the bench seat. Rei had substituted himself with a log not far behind Taka and the bench seat- which he now stood behind Taka and poked her in the ribs with his index fingers to test how ticklish she was. It was good to know these things, of course he told himself to rationalize his unusually friendly rebuttal to her playfulness. After all, what if they were captured and she was tickled for interrogation? He would need to know just how much tickling she could withstand. As his hands would strike suddenly, he too would retort to her. "The best predators are those that hunt other predators!"

Whether or not his surprise counter attack had been effective, after a few moments, he would return to his serious demeanor. "This mission brings me no joy. Let's be quick and use teamwork. I've watched all these people with my eyes and none of them re our killers. Which means the two killers are still somewhere within the park. We need to stick together but blend in so we can find them before they kill anyone else." he would say, explaining the rough plan. "Oh uh.. how are we going to fit in though?... I stick out way too much." he would say, sounding defeated. Social outings just weren't his thing.

Taka blinked, staring at the log in front of her for a moment before feeling slender prodding fingers tickling her sides. She jumped several inches and let out a half crazed giggle. Her hair was pulled back in a pony tail so when she spun around to face Rei, her hair nearly whipped him in the face because of his proximity. She caught her breath, her eyes lit up at the moment. He was laughing with her, and tickling her, and pranking her..? He clearly had another side to him and she wanted to know more. He mentioned a hard back ground, but the reason why things were hard were because of how soft every person truly was deep inside.

She nodded as he spoke and listened to his plan thoroughly, The 18 year old shook her head however and reached to her side and pulled out a scroll. She passed it to Rei as she explained her counter idea, "Nobody can catch a killer just walking around, that's crazy. But we can figure out who the target might be. I have a list of three genin who appear to be the weakest. Strangely, even the Academy Teachers mentioned they were unsure about graduating them to genin in the first place. There are several places we can start. We could locate them and guard them. We could examine their lives and interview friends and family, maybe find a consistent bully. I mean, how likely is it that someone is picking off specific and weak genin without at least a pseudo-personal connection? Once we get that information we can track and find the possible killers instead!"

Taka's thoughts were strong ideas but risky. Following targets may mean following the wrong target and missing the killers. Or it could mean following them, getting seen and sending the killers off to a new target. Finding information to track the killers would take more time and that could also cause problems, especially seeing as they would have to narrow down suspects and track them as well. But the plan was positive in being able to find not just a target but the killer at hand. "What do you think?"

His surprise counterattack had been successful and he tickled her for a few moments as he relished in the hysteric giggles she let out. All too son, it ended however as Rei returned to his usual serious nature. He listened to Taka as she offered a counter suggestion. It was a decent idea, but it had flaws in it that both of them had probably been aware of after she suggested it. Given the situation, that was probably the safest bet for anyone not of the Tataru bloodline... but Rei was in fact a Tataru and had a trick up his sleeves so to speak. "Your idea has merit, but Ive already taken the liberty of watching for the killers. They are in the park just up ahead. If we go investigate the recent victim's families and the potential next victims... we might miss the opportunity to stop them if they plan to kill someone in the park." He paused for a moment as he looked passed Taka towards the park. "In fact.. your suggestion ahs a good idea that we can use here. If you're right about them targeting low ranks like academy fresh genin... then there should be one of those genin in the park. All we have to do is find them and use them as bait to find the two killers." he would say, pleased with both himself and Taka's idea and how they had worked well together. Though he wasn't willing to share with Taka how exactly it was he knew the kiilers were in the park, she would just have to trust him.

The woman was honestly surprised by him. She didn't understand why he was insisting on his plans and this particular park. In the middle of the day? The killers might be stalking their prey but they would not kill them in the daytime, outside in a park of people. Their consistent method was paralytic poisoning and some sort of summons. She shook her head slowly, "Unless you  know the killers, there is no way you can be sure they are in the park. They could be at the academy or even at home., maybe training off somewhere. If we stay in the park and meander around, we will find genin here but I am not sure how that helps us. You can't lure an attacker out in the middle of the day."

The killers were cruel and planned attacks. Unless they had went over the top with confidence and ego boosts after recent murders, it was considerably unlikely that they would show themselves in any sort of hostile form. Taka looked at Rei, trusting his judgment, but she didn't feel safe going off his gut feelings of somehow believing they were here. She twisted her lips in slight, "We won't be able to tell which genin of poor quality is here or at home.Sure I have a little list, but, well... I would rather not make any mistakes. If we split up, we could each find a lower rank genin to protect and observe. Maybe we will see who is stalking them, but that would mean definitely blending in out here." She gave him an almost apologetic tone, "I look small enough to be maybe an academy teacher in training or an older sister. But you kind of look... scary... to most people. Not to me!"

Takara amended the phrase carefully. She had to be honest and he was witholding information if he knew the killers already. That being said she could see in her eyes that he intended to kill the murdering duo. It was a pity that neither the mission nor the pair here knew about the D Rank accomplice who aided in observing and avoided the killing in large part due to the protection the 2 C Ranks gave him from other bullies. Believing and knowing and searching for a team of 2 was different than looking for 3. To make matters harder, Takara had not learned whether or not she could stick to her nindo. If she believed so strongly in second chances, however, preventing their deaths as well as further victims, would be a challenge. To kill them, she would need a very strong and compelling reason. Considering their last mission, that kind of compelling might not even exist.

Stubborn, Taka was a very stubborn girl. That was one of her good qualities that Rei appreciated, but in this instance, it was hindering his plan. "Would you feel more assured if I told you that I was a sensory type shinobi?" He would ask almost as soon as she had finished speaking. Truthfully, he wasn't exactly a sensory type... but his eyes did give him a huge advantage that even sensory types shinobi couldn't accomplish. "I have been sitting here for a bit watching everyone enter and leave the park while I waited for you. The two we are looking for, already entered. Chances are that they are targeting someone inside the park, he said casually. Almost too casually. If Taka hadnt been paying attention to his words, she might have missed how serious Rei was actually being. Hence why he was being so pushy with his plan. No, he wasnt discrediting her brilliant idea, it was just that coincidentally, his plan was the shortest and safest way to ensure no one else died from these murderers.

He performed a few handseals at Taka's comment about him being scary. A puff fo smoke enveloped him and here-appeared from the smoke with a whole new appearance. He was a short boy with long black hair and pale shin. Blue eyes and a cheerful expression, he looked at Taka expectantly. "Am I so scary now?" he would say, almost teasingly sarcastic as he flaunted the "innocent little boy" persona. "Come on, we need to catch up with them before they find their next target. The targets are two men. Tall fellows. One is wearing a black outfit and the other is wearing a blue shirt, black pants and white jacket." he would say somewhat urgently and then began to skip down the path in the park as though he hadn't a care in the world.

Taka knew what a sensor nin was: someone who used chakra to identify specific shinobi and such. Unless he knew the killers personally, tracking or sensing made no difference in a park. All the shinobi in the area had chakra and just sensing it would tell him nothing of their plans. But he was persistent, and she never had doubted him before. She guessed he who something he wasn't telling her but instead of forcing him to speak of it, Taka relented and gave a nod. This was part of something she believed: trusting in others, companions, that is what gave you an extra edge and a boost to your real strength. Her blue orbs watched him as he shimmered and transformed into a young short boy with black hair. She rubbed her temple, "You look like a target now, good job."

She scratched at her hairline as he started to skip away. Guy was fricking ridiculous, dark, cold eyes now innocent, and his height lowered just a tad to give him a boyish appearance. She didn't try to look anything like herself, which in this instance made her seem like an older sister or a really old genin, which she was. It was no real secret that Taka, the 18 year old waitress was now back in the field and making her life change. Had she been younger the bullies might have affected her, but at her age she hardly noticed the looks she got and hardly cared when she did. Taka followed behind Rei and looked around, trying to see the two men he had spoken of and staying a reasonable 5m behind him.

She saw the man with the blue shirt and white jacket ahead, but he appeared to be alone. He was speaking to a genin, but strangely, the genin showed no fear. It looked like the man was simply talking to him and nothing more. She looked around but from her stand point she did not see the black adorned male Rei had mentioned. He could have been hiding behind a tree or in a nearby crowd. Taka paused from where he had stood and stepped a few feet to the side, towards a nearby set of three trees, looking around the trunks to see if there was a hiding second partner.

The man in the white jacket was the summoner, which meant that the medical shinobi was somewhere nearby. The summoner was talking to a genin, whom showed no fear. In fact, he wasn't responding much at all. On the surface, it simply looked like a genin and his sensei out int he park for some training or life lesson...but Rei's eyes could see differently. This shinobis soul was tainted black, filled with malevolent intent In comparison, the boy's soul was so pure as though he held no free will of his own. "That boy is under the murderer's control at the moment." he would say to Taka after a quick glance at the two and then looked around the treeline just as Taka was beginning to look around under her own suspicions. "The medical nin is in the third row of trees behind the public bathrooms. You deal with him and I'll take care of the one in the blue jacket and the boy." he would say, sending his pan to her. She would have to be careful to not spook the medical nin into running away. In comparison, the summoner felt secure, believing his disguise and act was enough to fool everyone even in public.

With the plan made, Rei would approach the summoner and the boy from behind in a casual manner, suppressing his killing intent. He was in the appearance of a young boy after all, likely one who knew the current genin being targeted. Rei approached with only two steps or so between him and the pair: he did two things as he called out then. First, he spoke. "Ah there you are buddy! I've been looking all over the village for you. We were supposed to go train today.. What happened?" he would say, directing his words to the genin under the summoner's control. The summoner, surprised at the sudden intrusion, began to wrack his brain for a way to explain in such a way to alleviate the newcomer's suspicions. Yet even as Rei had begun to spoke, his hand had taken action. With his words as a shroud to misdirect his real purpose, he forced the summoner to drop his guard by trying to keep up a social public appearance of a wholesome and healthy relation to the two young boys near him. A few onlookers peered in their direction, curious. The summoner's folly was believing he was safe in the eye of the public- yet there was someone more murderous than he... someone who cared not to be seen butchering a human being in a public park.

"Your friend and I are doing a bit of tra-!!" said the summoner, suddenly trailing off as his eyes widened and a burning sensation erupted from his upper back. His wide eyes turned to look fully at the black haired newcomer who was still smiling at him in an innocent manner, even as the boy's hand was behind the summoner's back, stabbing him with one of his own kunai. One stab, two stab, three quick precise stabs into the man's heart through his upper back. "Yo..you..!!" said the summoner, trying to hold onto his failing strength as his blood began to pour out of his back with every beat of his heart. Rei continued to smile like an innocent boy. He dropped the bloody kunai onto the man's chest as he fell. The summoner's eyes faded into a dull lifeless hue as the nearby park visitors screamed in horror and began to flee. The boy who had been under control, suddenly was released and his trance state interrupted. The boy blinked, trying to understand where he was and what was happening.

That was when he recognized the dead summoner, a man who had approached him earlier and then... nothing? He couldn't remember what had happened after that. Still.. now the man was dead at his feet and an unknown boy was smiling at his while his arm and face was covered in the dead man's blood. The genin let out a small terrified scream and fell on his butt as he backed away in fear of the smiling boy Rei. "Forget what you saw here okay? Go tell one of the Jounin to come here and retrieve these bodies." Rei would instruct in a serious tone even though he continued to smile. Two bodies? There was only one body here or so the boy thought... but the way the black haired boy was smiling, he didn't doubt that there was a second body somewhere. He nodded his head and fled for his life. Now.. I should go find Taka and see if she is okay. he told himself as he began to skip off into Taka's direction, flinging blood from his drenched arm as he went, the smile still vivid on his innocent boyish face.

Takara didn't see anything in the trees above and when he directed her to the restrooms, away she went. She didn't turn back to him, knowing that she could not do both: going after a killer and preventing Rei from killing. The green haired woman slipped around the back of the restroom in a crowd of kids waiting in line. She moved to the side wall and once she was sure that nobody paid attention, Taka took a deep breath. She concentrated chakra into her feet and silently crept upwards into the tree branches behind the restrooms. Once hidden in the leaves, she examined the trees from what would have been more eye level. She peered through them carefully and there were remarkably two people, not one up in the trees with her. There was a boy speaking with a teenager. The older teen looked more like an adult in his facial features, experienced beyond his years.

She listened carefully not making a sound and could hear the conversation forming. The younger boy was pointing out the genin in the distance talking to the white coated man. Takara was surprised but it appeared that the kid was explaining who to kill and why to the older teen beside him. Her eyebrows pinched together but she had to make her move and show Rei it did not require her to kill. She crouched on the branch, still using her surface walking technique for balance, and drew out two kunai. She swiftly hurled one and let it dig into the back of the older teen's shoulder. The guy cried out and suddenly grabbed the kid by the arm, as he turned his head finding Taka's face in the trees. She called out to him, "Don't hurt him, relax. I know what you've been doing and I have been sent to bring you in. Just come in peacefully and I won't have to do any more damage to you."

Taka waited and the dark haired teen smirked. He reached up, pulled out the kunai and aimed it at the boy's neck. Taka lifted her second kunai and stared hard. "Let me go or I will kill him." They had looked like they were working together before and even the child appeared surprised. "Brother, you said everything would be fine, you wouldn't let the bullies get me.." "Shut up!"

Takara frowned. She called out again but the kunai in the teen's hand wavered, drawing a line of blood. She thought of Rei's voice and heard a cry out in the distance as she was sure he killed his own opponent. She had given the guy, who looked the same age as she did, a second chance to relent and turn himself in but instead threatened to kill again. She bit her lip, fighting her own instincts to do nothing and to try to help further. But she didn't know for sure if the dark haired guy would even help. They had killed already and they had killed children no less. Takara hardened her heart for the sake of the boy in front of her now. She through the kunai at the head of the shinobi, killing him instantly.

As he began to fall backwards off the branch, already dead, his grip on the boy slackened, and he dropped the bloodied kunai. Takara kicked off the branch she was on, grabbing the boy and leaping towards the body as it fell. She held the kid, clearly a D rank shinobi in the making. A boy who had been hurt scared and needed protection from bullies. Her feet landed gracefully on the ground and she ended her surface walking, poised with the boy in her arm. She gripped the boy with one hand, and lifted the fallen kunai from the ground with the other. She wiped it on the grass, sheathed it, and then approached the body. She pulled the kunai out of the man's head, wiped it on his clothing, and sheathed that one as well.

With her hand gripping the boy's arm, she turned away from the body. "This is not the way shinobi behave or act. I won't be able to guarantee your future after this. Stay with me, don't fight, and we will take you in to the jounin. They will discuss and manage your case, okay?" When Rei approached, she felt somewhat ashamed at killing, and yet relieved. She had made the right choice and she knew it. She made eye contact with him and then explained what happened as they went back, including the part about how there were three not two shinobi in the wrong here. Still, she had given the killer a second chance and brought back a kid unharmed. It was a mission well done.
